We associate the lbs on the scale as a measure of how "fit" "skinny" "healthy" we are. STOP.
You weigh yourself, and you see a number that’s higher than usual.
Anxiety starts to creep in..
You feel the need to stop eating so much, or workout more, to decrease that number on the scale..
Sound familiar?
We have all gone through it, and why is that so?
Perception. What you perceive that weight on the scale to mean dictates the emotions that you start to feel. Self-loathing, self-pity, disgust, anger.
I have had TOO many clients get frustrated with the fact that the number on the scale hasn't gone down. They are confused because they feel stronger, better, faster, and yet it seems as if they haven't progressed to one of their most important goal: weight loss.
With that being said, many associate weight loss with fat loss. But weight loss isn't always equivalent to fat loss.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are feelings of happiness, contentment, accomplishment. This comes from typically a lower number on the scale (especially from people whose goal is weight loss)..
But this can be very detrimental. Using the scale as the only measurement of “success” and “progress” can cause you to believe that the work you are putting in isn’t producing the results you thought it would.
This is why your weight isn’t an indication of your true fitness level. The scale is a TOOL that is used to measure far more than just your fat mass, but also your water weight, muscle, organs, tissue, etc etc.
So many people emphasize the number on the scale as the degree of “fatness” but this actually isn’t the case. The scale shows much less than that.
Thus, I urge you all to look at that scale differently. Because of our upbringings and deep rooted beliefs about weight, it might benefit some of us to not even weigh ourselves at all.
Use other measures; the way your clothes fits, the way you see yourself in front of the mirror, circumference measurements, progress pictures, and ultimately your overall fitness journey and how it has impacted you on a grand scale. Focus on getting STRONGER, lasting LONGER, and building resiliency throughout this journey, because external factors, such as the scale, will deter you from your goals.
Keep pushing forward, don’t let one thing define your success. We are an accumulation of the actions we take on a daily. Listen to your body, stay strong, stay movin.
